For most of my life, people have talked about American exceptionalism, the notion that the bad things and the crises that happened in other countries could never happen here. A coup, an anti democratic uprising, never in the United states. But On January 6, 2021, America was no longer the exception. It was just the latest example of a democracy teetering on the brink of authoritarianism. Personally, I was at the Capitol that day ready to do my job and certify the presidential election. And I was looking forward to working with a president who denounces hate, who discouraged violence, abhorred discrimination. (03:03–03:12)
