And here in West Virginia, the Marine Corps has a very proud history. In fact, before West Virginia even became a state, Marines had already left their mark on this land. In 1859, a detachment of U.S. marines led by Colonel Robert E. Lee was called to put down John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry, then part of Virginia. It's an amazing history. I know this is one of the sparks of the Civil War. When our nation was tested again in the First World War, West Virginians answered the call. (13:22–13:35)
