I was a kid in Madison, Wisconsin, and my mom's best friend, my godmother, was a woman named Ada Deer. And Ada was already kind of an amazing figure at that point. She was from the Menominee Tribe in Wisconsin. The Menominee Tribe's recognition by the federal government had been terminated and [Ada Deer] led a campaign that wound up passing a national law to restore the Menominee Tribe's recognition by the federal government. And then later on she became a social worker. And then she decided to run for Congress. So when she ran, I was like putting up yard signs and stuffing envelopes for her. (01:22–01:34)
