We have a law to close Rikers island by 2027, and Eric Adams has made it functionally impossible to follow that because of how little he has done over the last few years, except for actually increasing the population of incarcerated New Yorkers. We've had a number of New Yorkers lose their life on Rikers just in these past few weeks. And the last time I visited Rikers, a colleague of mine had an incarcerated New Yorker try to take their own life in front of them. (48:53–48:59)
