The shutdown and the debate over government funding is now the longest in US History, passing the previous record, which was the shutdown that occurred in late 2018 and 2019, when Donald Trump was president for his first term. This shutdown is something that we can end almost immediately if President Trump does what other presidents do and decides to engage with congressional leadership. It's been the lack of his engagement that has led this shutdown to stretch on so long. For my part, with my Senate colleagues, we've been here at work every week trying to find a path forward.
