Now this July 4th, I believe it's going to be more powerful, more inspired than ever before. We not only started things off 250 years ago, we also invented the celebrations that go along with these things. 97 years ago on July 4, 1929, the BSO held its first free July 4th concert on the Esplanade. 52 years ago in 1974, we started the fireworks spectacular. And on the nation's bicentennial July 4, 1776, we began a series of record breaking concerts with the largest audience ever to hear an orchestra play. (13:54–14:05)
