U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon takes reporters' questions during Rhode Island visit

Published | Video Starts at 05:13

Well, I can tell you what my number one priority is as a Secretary of Education. I've stated, and that is literacy. Because what we found from the NAEP scores or our college report card, I mean, our national report card, when the president first took office was only 30%. Just think about that. 30 or slightly higher percentage of 12th graders, 8th graders, 4th graders are reading, are reading at proficient levels. That means they have very little opportunity to be successful. (05:13–05:26)

CLAIM

Asserts that literacy is a priority and NAEP scores showed only 30% proficiency when the president took office.
