The USDA is now importing and dispersing those flies in South Texas and will recalibrate to deploy those sterile flies as needed and where needed. The USDA is also constructing that new sterile screwworm production facility in Edinburgh which we need to get up and running as quickly as possible. Beginning last year, I directed state agencies to establish the Texas New World Screwworm Response Team. This team brought together livestock producers, veterinarians, wildlife experts and federal partners to to prepare in advance. (00:28–00:38)
