When they first made this decision in 2021, the jails were going to cost us $8 billion. Now it's going to cost us $16 billion. But in addition to that, We have a population of 73,7400 people on Rikers Island. The former jails that they're building are only going to house around 4,600 people. So this is not common sense. We need to make sure our lawmakers are having stronger laws. (15:19–15:25)
