Wisconsin State Sen. Dora Drake (D) on Juneteenth and "ongoing struggle" for Black liberation

Published | Video Starts at 00:29

Juneteenth, to me is more than a single holiday which commemorates when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, finally proclaiming all African Americans were free. To me it is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for liberation, even beyond bondage. You see, Juneteenth was only the first barrier after 246 years of slavery in America and 89 years after the founding of our democracy. Not long after that was the retaliation from Reconstruction by the institution of Jim Crow, followed by mass incarceration and institutions meant to prohibit the advancement of African Americans. (00:29–00:40)

CLAIM
