At the time of the New Deal, FDR had created the Works Project Administration, the wpa, to create jobs for Americans who are out of work. But in the first round, they had not created any jobs for people with disabilities. And so A dozen disabled New Yorkers showed up outside the office of the WPA, which happened to be in Madison Square park, and went on a hunger strike until the WPA created jobs for Americans with disabilities. all across the country. And that was the birth of the disability rights movement, which continues to this day in things like 504 Dems. And which we obviously critically need at this moment. (45:08–45:24)
