As a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, I was proud to vote to advance the bipartisan Railway safety Act of 2023 to improve freight rail safety and prevent train derailment disasters. This legislation will be essential in addressing safety requirements for rail carriers, increasing penalties for violations of rail safety laws, and strengthening railroad emergency response plans. Though this is a step in the right direction, we must do more to ensure a safer and more efficient rail transportation system for all. (02:56–03:11)
