Let me just start by saying it is absurd that in this committee we are required to defend time and time and time again the humanity of marginalized communities, our right to education, our right to appropriate and proper medical care. The life expectancy for black people in my district is eight years earlier than white people. Black women are dying three times more during pregnancy than white women. Three in four black adults develop hypertension by age 55. We still have no widespread cures for uterine fibroids or sickle cell anemia. (00:22–00:28)
