I rise today in recognition of House Resolution 27, which recognizes January 23, 2019 as Maternal Health Awareness Day here in Pennsylvania. In 1986, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention created a pregnancy Mortality Surveillance system to find the cause of maternal death in the United States. This system found that despite declines in maternal deaths in other parts of the world, the United States reported much higher pregnancy related deaths. (00:10–00:23)
