And he wanted Florida to be acquired from Spain. He had a major role in negotiations in Pinckney's treaty of 1795, which established the boundary between Spanish Florida and the US and That northern border is still in place today between the state of Florida and the state of Georgia. But he wanted Florida because he thought it was important to maintaining American independence.
