I was interested to hear their ideas for the future of the UW system. Along with my colleagues on the committee, I urge them to look at bold reforms for the future of higher ed. UW's most significant challenge is declining enrollment, which is likely to accelerate because birth rates started dropping nearly 18 years ago. That's the main reason many of the 26 UW System campuses are facing budget shortfalls today. Rapid economic changes and new technologies are a challenge, but there are also opportunities.
