Michigan has one of the highest death rates among black pregnant people because our health system fails to provide comprehensive and accessible health care. Folks here may not know this, but Mental health is the leading cause of maternal deaths and black women in our country are the most under reported and undertreated. As the chair of the Congressional Mamas Caucus, our members and I are committed to improving mothers mental health all year around, not just this week. (00:23–00:31)
