Let me start with the good news, which is that things that would have seemed impossible a generation ago in terms of fairness for LGBTQ people have come to pass in a short amount of years. When I joined the military, it was actually the law of the land, that if anybody knew that I was going home to a boyfriend or I tried to get married, then I'd be fired. That wasn't just the practice. That was the law. When I ran for mayor in Indiana, had I been out, I think it would have been considered crazy that I would have run for office. (35:30–35:45)

CLAIM
