President Obama was such a strong supporter of equality for the LGBTQ community that he created a unique position within the US Government, a special envoy to advance the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex persons. That position, so unique that only a handful existed around the world, led US Foreign policy to protect the queer community from violence and discrimination globally. It was first led by Special Envoy Randy Berry. From 2015 until 2017, when Trump began his first presidential term, that position was then vacant until President Biden filled the position again in June of 2021 with a very exciting person.
