Of course, not everything worth discovering can be observed through a telescope or measured by an instrument. Insight can equally begin in an archive or a studio, a clinic or a classroom. Columbia has helped us better understand the societies we build, the cultures we inherit, and shape, the institutions and habits that sustain democracy. the stories we tell, and the obligations we owe each other. Across our university, our faculty, students, staff and alumni teach and learn, research and create challenge assumptions, pursue difficult questions, and ask us to encounter ideas and perspectives beyond our own.
