These proposals will address public drug use and help more New Yorkers struggling with addiction get the help they need. First, we are asking state lawmakers to extend the lifeline of involuntary commitment to those struggling with serious addiction. We have already made it easier to use involuntary commitment to help people with untreated severe mental illness get care. And the Compassion Interventions act will give medical professionals the legal authority they need to transport someone who appears to be struggling with addiction to a hospital for evaluation and for support.
