On this day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation proclamation was signed, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that they were free. Juneteenth is a powerful reminder that freedom has always been a long fought, hard won, and still remains unfinished. The fight for racial justice did not end in 1865.
