He studied the Constitution. He famously cited it as a glorious liberty document. He understood that the problem wasn't our founding principles. It was a failure to apply them. Douglass believed that every individual is the master of their own soul and labor. His life story, from the field, from the slavery fields to the world stage, is one of the greatest narratives of perseverance in US History. He didn't see himself as an outsider looking in.
