It is the position of the Department of Justice that the following commutations and, or pardons are null and void because they were not authorized by the President of the United States. Now, commutation, they're shortening the sentences of criminals in jail. The next step might be to send the US Marshals to go arrest someone who had been commuted and released from jail and to remand him again to the Bureau of Prisons to serve the rest of his sentence. Now, almost immediately, that defendant would file a legal claim challenging that and would probably file a writ of habeas corpus. Habeas corpus is Latin for produce the body. (19:57–20:15)
