We are taught to bargain down what is possible for our lives. We've been taught to lower our expectations for things that a generation ago were afforded to every American. It was not. It didn't feel like the fantasy that it sometimes feels today, 30, 40 years ago to be able to have a job, one job, support your family, go on that vacation and put some money in your pocket. But slowly, over decades, there's been so much work to get the aspirations of working people smaller and smaller and to see how little we are willing to accept. (21:59–22:14)
